My lecturer lectures

Since the Thun-Hohenstein University Reform of 1849, Austrian university teaching has been characterized by freedom of teaching, a special case of freedom of expression. University faculty members with habilitations can therefore freely design courses in terms of content and methodology and are entitled to express their scientific and artistic opinions without political constraints. In reality, however, this freedom is severely restricted, on the one hand by study regula­tions and, on the other, by inno­vation-stif­ling behavioral patterns of competing collea­gues and organi­zational superiors. Present educational policy developments, however, show that little far-sighted politicians are currently considering whether it would be possible to cut off third-party funding for university employees who express themselves publicly in ways they dislike. This leads to censorship in the form of an anxiety-caused self-censorship and it effectively restricts academic freedom - a develop­ment that is fully in line with the overall trend toward the establishment of autocratic and authoritarian political systems. Traces of academic freedom can only be found in so-called "lecturer lectures", which, however, are almost never compulsory for students. These, my ultimate lecturer lectures and their written materials are presented below.
